How to film the moment they hear their song

Five minutes to read. One take to film. Here is how to get a reaction you'll both want to keep.

Why it matters

We're looking for real first reactions: the first time someone hears a song written just about them. No acting, no second takes.

With everyone's written OK, we may use your video in our ads and social posts. That's why the details below matter: good light and a clear face make the moment usable.

1. Pick a setup

Illustration: woman in a parked car's passenger seat, filmed from the dashboard at eye level
Car

A parked car in daylight

  • Engine off, parked somewhere quiet.
  • Phone on a dash mount, pointing at the passenger.
  • Play the song through the car speakers.

At home, face to the light

  • Sit them facing a window or a lamp.
  • Phone on a tripod, or propped on books at eye level.
  • Play from a speaker or the TV, not the filming phone.

  • Keep the camera on the person the song is for.
  • Others can be in frame, but everyone in frame signs the consent note.

2. Good vs bad framing

  3. 3

Hold the phone verticallyPortrait, at their eye level, about an arm's length away.

  4. 4

Start recording 3 to 5 seconds before the songWe need the moment just before they realise.

  5. 5

Keep rolling for 60 seconds or moreThrough the song and the hug or what they say after. One take, no cuts.

  6. 6

Don't coach the reactionDon't tell them in advance, don't ask them to cry or react again. Just let it happen.

Please don't

4. Make the song great

The song is what makes them react. When you create it, add 2 or 3 real details only you would know:

How you metA nicknameA family jokeA special placeA song you both love

Real details = real tears. A generic song gets a polite smile.
